How the Cookin' Spoon began?

The heritage of what some call "Southern cooking" originates from the enslaved people who lived on plantations creating a Gullah-Geechie culture both in food and traditions. The presence is felt throughout the regions from North Carolina spanning to Florida including food, hospitality, libations and music to highlight a few areas. Most of the foods I enjoy to cook and eat fall into this category such as grits, collard greens or boiled peanuts.🤤 If you do not have a cooking spoon in your kitchen to taste, stir or mix then you certainly need one! Passion and taste is what you can look forward to.

Chef Othel Plowden

Having familial ties to the Lowcountry area, food has always been deeply ingrained in life from my grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. I grew up cooking Sunday Morning breakfasts at an early age, watching my grandfather cook lima beans and fish and grilling for different functions.

I never imagined it would lead to a career path until my senior year of high school when I was enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program.

My background and culinary accents are rooted Southern hospitality. There are so many avenues and cultural stories told through food, so I look forward to sharing the snapshot of how I view food with you! 😌
